In March 2020, Carolina Sandretto, just like many of us, lived her first lockdown.
At that time, she was alone, in her family home in Tuscany (Italy), surrounded by many objects belonging to the most important women of her life: her grandmothers and her mother. Carolina began photographing these objects – mostly furniture and porcelain – while neatly cataloging them by shape and color, somehow revealing the people they belonged to, as well as their personalities, and helping materializing a “ghost” presence that filled the silence and the solitude of that time.
Thus, Internal Memories/External Memories was born. A double artist’s book, two volumes in a limited edition of 199 (numbered) copies, precious, poetic and at times poignant. Exploring an intimate memory and her personal inheritances, within Internal Memories Sandretto allows us to gently peep into her innermost space. External Memories, instead, focuses on the perception we have on the passing of time, and the illusion that photography can stop it. Sandretto, as a form of discipline, photographed the same view at sunset every day, and by exposing multiple time the polaroid films, she created denser photographs, in an attempt to enlarge the passing of time.
