RELATIVE CALM. The drawings, by Robert Wilson.
On the occasion of the theatre performance Relative Calm at LAC Lugano, Robert Wilson’s drawings will be shown for the first time in Switzerland, at Galleria Michela Negrini.
The New York Times described Robert Wilson as “a towering figure in the world of experimental theater and an explorer in the uses of time and space on stage. Transcending theatrical convention, he draws in other performance and graphic arts, which coalesce into an integrated tapestry of images and sounds”.
Susan Sontag has said of Wilson’s work, “it has the signature of a major artistic creation. I can’t think of any body of work as large or as influential.”
Through his signature use of light, his investigations into the
structure of a simple movement, and the classical rigor of his scenic and furniture design, Wilson has continuously articulated the force and originality of his vision.
Wilson’s close ties and collaborations with leading artists, writers, and musicians continue to fascinate audiences worldwide.
In 2023 Robert Wilson works on the series of drawings Relative Calm.
The drawings are inspired by Vaslav Nijinsky (1889-1950), one of the most celebrated dancers and choreographers of his time, who danced in Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. He worked on the themes of dance, rhythm, and motion in a highly abstracted manner. Strong colors, arches, concentric circles, ellipses, and sweeping curves dominate his compositions. Wilson, with the complexity of hybrid forms of expression, merged media and blurred borderlines, focusing on circular shapes. The circle being a complete, perfect movement, an organizing principle: simple and elegant. The drawings are marked by a strong, rhythmic accent and call to mind a dance motion or the musical progression of a film sequence.
